The role of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage was to help make New Zealand culture visible and accessible. It provided advice to the government on arts, heritage and broadcasting issues; managed and funded a number of arts, heritage, broadcasting and sports organisations and programmes; managed national monuments, war graves and historic graves; supported and promoted the history and heritage of New Zealand; and administered key cultural and heritage legislation.
