GENERAL

Mr R. E. Rawle (ACIV) a former public servant, was born in Wellington on 2 August 1911. He attained a Bachelor of Commerce from Victoria University College Wellington in 1955 and was first employed by the Ministry of Works Department. In 1963, he was seconded to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (D.S.I.R.) and went on to lead the 1963-64 New Zealand Antarctic Research Programme. From 1966-70, he was district accountant for the Ministry of Works. He served in the New Zealand Military from 1930-31 in the Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve (RNZNVR); from 1940-45 in the Second New Zealand Expeditionary Force (2NZEF); from 1949-54 in the New Zealand Territorial Force, and retired from the Army in 1962. He was then seconded to the Department of External Affairs/New Zealand Army Regular Force for service with the UN Military Observer Group until 1961.

He was a committee member of the New Zealand Antarctic Society, Wellington Branch from 1974-84
