Labour Party Member of Parliament, 1981-2009. Labour Party Deputy Leader 1990-1993, and Labour Party Leader 1993-2008. First woman appointed to the role of Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand, 1989-1990, and elected to the Privy Council, 1990. First woman elected Prime Minister of New Zealand, 1999-2008. Minister of the Crown, 1989-1990 and 1999-2008. Ministerial portfolios included Health, Labour, Conservation, Housing, Arts, Culture and Heritage, Ministerial Services, and Minister responsible for the Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) and Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB). Left Parliament in 2009 to take up a new appointment as head of the United Nations Development Programme.
