This series consists of Civil Air Accident Files concerning the investigation into individual air accidents around New Zealand. Such investigations aim at determining the circumstances and causes of air accidents and incidents with a view to avoiding similar occurences in the future. The records in this series were originally part of the Air Department registered subject files system which also included administrative files concerning air accidents (such as 25/1/-, 25/2/- and  25/3/- files).

The Ministry of Transport was established to provide a co-ordinated administration of the transport sector and to provide integrated advice to Government on transport policy. It was initially formed by an amalgamation of separate departments for Transport and Civil Aviation which covered the road transport and aviation sectors. Subsequently it took on responsibility for the maritime transport roles formerly carried out by the Marine Department.

Transport Accident Investigation Commission more detail…

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) was the New Zealand Crown Entity responsible for the independent investigation of significant aviation, rail and marine accidents and incidents. TAIC did not investigate road accidents or incidents except when the circumstances might have significant implications for the safety of, for example, the rail transport system.

Access to this record has been restricted by the Agency.

Access Statement:

All files are restricted for seventy years from the date of opening of the file. All Transport Accident Investigation Commission staff, upon presentation of a signed authorisation from the Chief Commissioner or Chief Inspector of the Transport Accident Investigation Commission, or a current signed warrant, are to have access to the files.

Under no circumstances will access to files within the 70 year restricted period be granted without the written authority of the Chief Commissioner or Chief Inspector of the Transport Accident Investigation Commission.

Preservation Restrictions

Some records are protected under section 49(1)(a) of the Public Records Act 2005.

Audio records and films are not issuable due to their technical formats.

Photographic negatives are not issuable due to preservation reasons.

Photographs require that gloves are worn when viewing.

Contact Archives New Zealand for permission to view or the availability of alternative access provisions. Viewing is by appointment only.
