War artists were appointed in both World Wars. Their work was held in a number of different institutions before settling at Archives New Zealand in 1981. During that time dispersal meant some works were damaged, others were lost, and no comprehensive list was ever made. The numbering sequence in series 898 is an artificial one, begun by the National Art Gallery in 1952, and continued by the then National Archives from 1981 with a Q prefix.
