The files in this Series are part of the Multiple Number Subject (MNS) system used by the Headquarters of the New Zealand Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) based in Wellington. The MNS system was established in August 1957. The MNS system covers a range of NZSIS's operational, policy, organisational and administrative subject matters. In October 2005 the NZSIS started to operate a MNS electronic system in conjunction with the manual system.
Files so far transferred to Archives New Zealand from the MNS system predominately contain former Police Special Branch documents dealing with the 1951 Waterfront Dispute.
Many of the files in this Series have had original documents moved onto parallel files. These parallel files contain:
- Sensitive security information (mainly sourced from other Commonwealth countries)
- Documents giving the names of individuals (e.g. officers, agents, informants, etc.). The documents identifying individuals have been replaced with document copies on which the identity of individuals have been removed.
